SETTING BACKGROUND
Pretty Little Liars is a teen murder mystery TV show that takes place in the “quiet” upper middle-class Pennsylvania suburb Rosewood. Students continue to go to high school and prep for the ACTs in spite of the abnormally high bodycount around the town and the tendencies of teachers to creep on their students. The focus of the story is four junior year gal pals who’re being cyberbullied by a mysterious tormentor posing as their ringleader, who was murdered a year ago. Their stalker has a flair for the dramatic, such as trying to trap the four friends in a burning building and filling someone’s car with bees. You know, as you do.
PERSONALITY
Spencer is a Hastings, and in Rosewood, that means something. The youngest daughter of a family of high-powered lawyers and bankers, Spencer’s been wearing blazers since she was in grade school, where she received nothing short of straight A’s. Caffeinated, dressed to impress and running for captain of the debate team, Spencer has “joked” to her friends that all she’s trying to do with her overachieving is survive in her family; turns out, that isn’t that far from the truth.
Like her family, Spencer is competitive, results-oriented and cutthroat. A character once sneered to Spencer “you would like the Lannisters”, and he’s correct, because the unspoken Hastings family motto is to win, no matter whom you have to stamp your Louboutins over to do it. Spencer isn’t above planting evidence, stripping down or plagiarizing an essay to get ahead, and often, in fact, revels in the thrill of pursuing a goal. She’s happiest when she has something to work towards, and while she’s afraid of falling off the tightrope balancing her grueling academic life and her role as the “Nancy Drew” of her friends, the risk is its own reward sometimes. There’s nothing Spencer loves more than being the smartest person in the room, and she usually is.
Unfortunately, just because Spencer’s trying her best to live up to her family’s sky-high standards with that big brain of hers doesn’t mean her family has protected her. Even prior to the disappearance and murder of Spencer’s close friend Alison and the subsequent cyberbullying, Spencer was already vulnerable, having been sexually propositioned by not one, but two of her older sister’s fiancés. Not only was Spencer blamed for her sister’s broken-off engagements, but one of the fiancés continued to live with them even when Spencer insisted, with good reason, that the fiancé had been complicit in Alison’s murder. Spencer’s family proceeded to dismiss and gaslight her, contributing to Spencer’s rightful paranoia and lack of trust in guardian figures.
But while Spencer’s distrustful and scared, she’s no shrinking violet; Spencer’s never met a challenge she didn’t work to meet, and Spencer works both hard and smart. She’s brilliant and proactive, which is a boon when she’s putting her intelligence and energy into defending herself and her friends, and a con when she’s bulldozing over people’s emotions or good advice in pursuit of answers or taking whatever action she’s decided is best. Spencer can be prickly, condescending and pedantic, and her overachiever attitude can either help her make a perfect period-accurate replica of Mary Queen of Scots’ execution dress for Halloween (“I didn’t even use a pattern!”) or it can wind her up to the point of burnout. When Spencer crashes, she crashes hard – “pretends to have amnesia so she can get put on a psych hold and take a break from her life” hard.
Thankfully, Spencer’s usually got people to help put her back together. Spencer’s a loyal and helpful friend, and her flaws often become lovable foibles when she’s in an amiable environment, and her skills serve the group. Out of all her friends, Spencer was the only one gutsy and grounded enough to challenge their ringleader Alison when Alison was too cruel. Spencer’s often both the brains and one of the ones most willing to pick up a shovel and hit someone for threatening her or her loved ones – she’d just prefer to outsmart them instead.
Ultimately, as much as seems way too high-strung and stressed out for her age, Spencer's just a teenage girl trying to figure out who she is in a hostile world that doesn't always go the way you plan, even when you busted your ass making flashcards and prepping all night on that plan. She may be polished but emotionally, she's a little rough around the edges. What else is being seventeen for?
Besides decathlon and early college admissions, of course.
POWER SELECTION
POWER TYPE
Magic
Magic: Necromancer
Murder Mystery Solved: Spencer can cast a spell where she can touch a dead body and see the last thirty seconds of what happened to them before their death from their point of view. Also works on animals and monsters.
Dead Languages: Spencer can cast a spell to speak to ghosts, no matter what language the ghosts spoke.
Lucky Guess: Spencer can cast a spell using animal bones to point her in the direction of anything she’s looking for. This isn’t more specific than a cardinal direction, although it works long-distance.
ABILITIES
Spencer has a frightening knowledge of trivia, can sew period-accurate gowns, can do normie magic tricks, and is a competitive horse jumper. In one episode she built an EMP bomb out of prom decorations based on something she saw on the internet. Spencer can defuse a bomb. Spencer once performed surgery with no experience besides YouTube tutorials. Pretty Little Liars is a hell of a show. Just assume that if it's something that can be learned quickly, Spencer can pick it up.
SETTING/SUITABILITY
Spencer’s a normal teenage girl, but she’s also from a trashy teen soap opera canon where someone tries to murder her every few episodes. She’s extremely smart, driven and adaptable, and won’t waste any time at all sitting around feeling sad about things.
